DUBAI – Expatriates returning to the UAE after their vacation were shocked to find that they had racked up huge mobile phone bills of up to Dh30,000.
Telecommunications provider du has reportedly waived the phone bills of a number of holidaymakers, blaming the problem to an online glitch.
Many more customers have taken to social media to complain that they have been billed up to Dh15,000 when they arrived in the UAE after their holiday.
Customers said the huge bills came as a shock because they only used their UAE sim card for calls or data for just a few minutes.
Georgina Evans, 25, returned to the UAE from her UK trip on Sunday and had discovered that her mobile phone was out of service even though she only switched it on three times for a few minutes of data use, according to The National.
Evans said she felt “sick” with shock when a du customer service agent informed her that her mobile phone line was “cut off because I owed Dh30,000.”
Du has cancelled the charged and had cited an online glitch as the cause of the problem, Evans told the newspaper.
On du’s Facebook page, more users voiced their complaints. One user said he returned from the UK with a Dh5,000 bill that led to the disconnection of his mobile services.
Another Facebook user said: "I have had the same - arriving in UK from Dubai to find my service disconnected due to a whopping and unexplainable Dh7,000 charge emerging overnight. The du staff can't explain what's gone on until the generation of the next invoice."
Du has confirmed that Evans’ case has been resolved but would not comment further.
