Philippine floods: UAE expresses solidarity with Filipinos as floods kill nearly 60

DUBAI – The UAE expressed solidarity with the Philippines over victims of landslides and floods caused by the tropical storm that hit several areas of the Asian country. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed its “sincere condolences and sympathy” with the Philippine government, Filipino people and families of the victims, and wished the injured a speedy recovery. On Wednesday (April 13), officials put the death toll to 58, with at least 28 people missing after days of heavy rain caused landslides and floods in central and southern Philippines. In the hard-hit city of Baybay in Leyte province, 47 bodies were recovered from landslides that also left nearly 200 people injured, officials said. Army, police and other rescuers were struggling with mud and debris to find missing people. Baybay Mayor Jose Carlos Cari said more rescuers and heavy equipment have arrived in landslide-hit villages as part of search and rescue efforts. "We're looking for so many more missing people," Cari said. In Cebu City, schools were suspended on Wednesday, after Mayor Michael Rama declared a state of calamity. The city is expecting a second tropical storm called Malakas (Strong). ICA/FAY/Expat Media
