UAE eyes more highly skilled workers

  DUBAI – The UAE is planning to increase the number of highly skilled workers in the country by the year 2021, the Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation said on Tuesday (January 10). Speaking at the Federal National Council meeting, Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash said the country plans to have 40 percent of the UAE workforce composed of highly skilled workers by 2021. “The UAE also aims at increasing productivity of workers in non-oil sectors by five percent annually,” Ghobash said. The number of skilled workers in the UAE grew to 600,000 in 2016, compared to 400,000 in 2015. The number of workers with specialized talents grew by 20 percent in the last five years, Ghobash said. He said that the ministries of Human Resources and Finance is also studying a plan to decrease fees for companies committed to increasing the number of skilled workers in the emirates. There were 4.7 million registered workers in the UAE in 2015, according to statistics from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. Construction, trade and industry sectors were the top three sectors with the highest employment rates in the UAE labour market.
