UAE food price watch: Ministry of Economy monitors more than 40 outlets for 300 commodities

  DUBAI – The Ministry of Economy said it is monitoring the prices of 300 basic commodities in more than 40 stores and cooperatives in the UAE. According to the ministry, the stores and cooperatives are being regularly monitored to keep the prices of goods in check. The price check includes fish and seafood, meat and poultry, bread, grains and related products, dairy, eggs, oils, vegetables and fruits, water, juices, and cleaning materials. The ministry said that any “unjustified price hike” is a violation, and that the owner of the establishment found violating the price cap will be subject to legal consequences. Any increase in the price of more than 11,000 commodities is subject to the approval of the Ministry of Economy. The commodities include milk, fresh chicken and eggs, rice, flour, sugar, salt, cooking oil, water and others. However, prices of biscuits, chocolates, some cheese products, frozen food products, juices, ice cream, tea, coffee, cocoa, potato chips and oats can be increased without prior approval from the ministry, since this second category of goods are” subject to supply and demand variations”.
