The UAE is implementing mandatory genetic testing as part of premarital screenings for Emirati citizens starting January 2025, according to the Abu Dhabi Department of Health. Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department, announced that this decision aims to help couples make informed choices to prevent hereditary diseases and ensure healthier family planning. "This preventive measure safeguards community members from hereditary diseases and allows couples to identify shared genetic mutations that could be passed on to their offspring," Al Ghaithi explained. The genetic screening will analyze 570 genes linked to over 840 genetic disorders, helping detect common mutations associated with conditions such as vision and hearing loss, developmental delays, and blood clotting disorders. The testing process, which takes approximately 14 days, will offer participants health recommendations based on their genetic data. These insights empower couples with critical information for family planning, as well as early intervention options. "Genetic testing contributes to preserving the health and well-being of community members and ensures a healthier future for generations to come," Al Ghaithi emphasized. The initiative forms part of the Emirates Genome Council's work under the leadership of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. With its ongoing Emirati Genome Programme, the UAE is aiming to create one of the world’s largest genomic databases by collecting over 750,000 samples. The Department of Health highlighted recent findings from the program, noting that 12 percent of new genetic variants have been identified. Additionally, 46 percent of Emiratis have genes aiding lactose digestion, while 20 percent have an elevated risk for developing Type 1 diabetes. By 2040, these insights could guide healthcare initiatives and public health strategies.
