UAE government begins 3-day Covid-19 meeting

  DUBAI – The UAE government began on Sunday (May 10) an important three-day meeting on the country’s Covid-19 strategy. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said the UAE's "national priorities" must be assessed. Sheikh Mohammed led the remote meeting of experts, ministers and officials from more than 100 government agencies in the country. The meeting aims to draft a framework for a comprehensive strategy focused on six sectors: health, economy, food security, education, community and government. "Our national priorities need to reviewed to cope with the post-COVID-19 world. Our financial and human resources need to be redirected to strengthen our medical, food and economic security through new programmes and project," Sheikh Mohammed said. "New teams are required to work faster, more thoroughly and more responsively to the fast-changing daily developments," he said. He called on a UAE-wide strategy and emergency plans to help the UAE recover from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, said Sunday’s meeting reflects directives of Sheikh Mohammed to guarantee the readiness of all sectors. He said the UAE government is drafting frameworks, strategic directives, and long-term and short-term objectives that will meet future development needs. The meeting came as the UAE’s daily number of Covid-19 cases continued to climb, with 781 more people contracting the virus on Sunday. The UAE had partially relaxed its lockdown as the country marked Ramadan, with malls and shops open amid precautionary measures.
