The UAE has introduced a new Green Visa aimed at attracting skilled professionals, investors, and entrepreneurs, as part of its broader strategy to enhance economic growth and diversification. This innovative visa offers significant flexibility and security, allowing expatriates to live and work in the UAE without the need for a traditional sponsor.

Eligibility and benefits

The Green Visa is targeted at skilled workers, freelancers, investors, and entrepreneurs who can contribute to the UAE's economic landscape. Key benefits of the Green Visa include: Longer residency periods: The Green Visa grants longer residency durations compared to traditional visas. Residents can stay in the UAE for up to five years, with the possibility of renewal, providing greater stability for expatriates and their families. No sponsorship requirement: Unlike traditional residency visas that require a local sponsor, the Green Visa allows individuals to self-sponsor. This offers increased autonomy and flexibility, particularly for freelancers and entrepreneurs who wish to operate independently. Family sponsorship: Green Visa holders can sponsor their family members, including spouses, children, and parents, for the duration of their visa. This feature is especially attractive to professionals and investors who want to ensure their families can reside with them in the UAE. Employment flexibility: The Green Visa facilitates ease of movement between employers. Who can apply for a Green Visa?

Freelancers, self-employed and skilled employees can apply for a Green Visa. Freelancers or self-employed applicants must submit a freelance or self-employment permit from Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, proof of a bachelor’s degree or a specialised diploma, and evidence of income from self-employment in the previous two years amounting to not less than Dh360,000. Skilled employees applying for the Green Visa must have a valid employment contract, and be classified in the first, second or third occupational level as per Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. They must also hold a minimum of bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and a monthly salary of not less than Dh15,000.

Application process

Applying for the Green Visa involves a straightforward process, designed to be user-friendly and efficient. Interested candidates can apply through the UAE's official immigration portals or authorized typing centers. The key steps include: Document preparation: Applicants must gather necessary documents such as passports, proof of qualifications, employment contracts, and evidence of financial stability. For investors, additional documentation related to business activities may be required. Online application: The application can be submitted online through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) or the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) websites. Applicants need to fill out the required forms and upload supporting documents. Review and approval: Once submitted, applications will be reviewed by the relevant authorities. This includes background checks and verification of provided information. The approval process may take a few weeks, depending on the volume of applications. Issuance of visa: Upon approval, applicants will receive their Green Visa, allowing them to reside and work in the UAE for the specified duration. They can then proceed to sponsor their family members, if applicable.
