UAE to help 18,000 Filipinos get better, cheaper water access in rural areas

  DUBAI – A new UAE initiative will help 18,000 Filipinos get better, cheaper access to water in rural areas, it was announced on Wednesday (December 15). The initiative, Beyond2020, will secure reliable water supply to two rural communities in the Philippines using carbon-neutral technology. It will reduce water costs by 85 percent. Four hydraulic ram pumps and 13 kiosks will be set up for 3,000 residents in the village of Cabagnaan in Negros Occident province, and for 15,000 people in 14 villages Altavista, Leyte province. The technology pumps water in mountain areas without the use of electricity or fuel. “The initiative’s deployment in the Philippines offers communities innovative water technology solutions that aim to improve the health and wellbeing of rural residents through long-term impact, paving the way for an easier, safer and more sustainable lifestyle,” said Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, UAE Ambassador to the Philippines. The Philippines marks the tenth deployment of Beyond2020. The Beyond2020 initiative was launched by the Zayed Sustainability Prize in partnership with several leading organisations. “The UAE and the Philippines share a common vision towards building a more prosperous and sustainable future for their people.. By tackling water scarcity, the drive to further optimise a vital resource for the benefit of communities in the Philippines, also coincides with the recent launch of UAE’s ‘Principles of the 50’ that seek to stimulate socio-economic growth through humanitarian aid,” Al Zaabi added. Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hjayceelyn Quintana called the initiative an “essential, environmentally-friendly and life-changing” solution. “We are confident that the mobilsation of international action that empowers and supports our communities’ ability to access and manage water resources will promote widespread benefits to the daily lives of impacted beneficiaries," Quintana said. The initiative is aimed at also helping Filipinos pursue livelihoods, such as aquaculture, livestock breeding and farming.
