UAE Hope Probe reaches Mars orbit: What’s next?

  DUBAI – The Hope Probe, the UAE’s first space mission to Mars, reached the orbit of the Red Planet on Tuesday, completing its 7-month journey. What's next for the Emirates Mars Mission? The arrival to the Red Planet marks the Arab world’s first space exploration as well as the 50th anniversary of the UAE’s Union formation. It is the first of three exploratory missions to arrive on Mars in February, with China’s mission arriving on February 10 and the US mission arriving on February 18. Globally, the Hope Probe is the fifth space mission to reach Mars. Hailing the historic breakthrough, UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan credited Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for implementing the idea “until its success." What’s next for the Hope Probe? Now that it has entered the Martian orbit, the probe will transition to the science phase– transmitting its first image of Mars back to Earth within just one week. The interplanetary mission will continue to orbit Mars and study the dynamics in the Martian atmosphere on a global scale. Using three scientific instruments on board of the spacecraft, the Hope Probe will provide a set of measurements fundamental to an improved understanding of circulation and weather in the Martian lower and middle atmosphere. The core mission will involve capturing more than 1,000 GB of new data over one Martian year or 687 Earth days, which will be shared with 200 scientific and educational institutions around the world. The mission can be extended for another two years, to provide the first-ever complete picture of the Martian atmosphere. Through closely studying the connection between current Martian weather and the climate of the Red Planet, scientists will gain deeper insights into the past and future of the Earth as well as the potential for human life on Mars and other planetary objects.
