An Iranian-launched missile intercepted by the UAE on February 28, 2026. MINISTRY OF DEFENCE

The Ministry of Defense confirmed on Sunday (March 1) that the UAE Air Force and Air Defence Forces intercepted 137 ballistic missiles and 209 drones launched toward the country since the start of what it described as an Iranian attack on Saturday (February 28). According to the Ministry, 137 Iranian ballistic missiles were detected. Of these, 132 were destroyed, while five fell into the sea. The Ministry also said 209 drones were identified, with 195 intercepted. Fourteen drones landed within the country’s territory and waters, causing what officials described as collateral damage. As a result of the interceptions, shrapnel fell in various parts of the UAE, leading to minor material damage to a number of civilian properties. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of large-scale destruction linked directly to the incoming projectiles. The Ministry emphasized the high readiness of the country’s air defence systems and their ability to handle multiple and simultaneous threats. “The relevant authorities immediately mobilized their full readiness and capabilities to address the situation according to established procedures for such cases,” the Ministry said, adding that necessary measures were taken to ensure the safety of residents and secure affected sites. The Ministry condemned the attack “in the strongest terms,” describing it as a dangerous escalation that threatens the safety of civilians and undermines regional stability. It added that the targeting constitutes a violation of national sovereignty and international law, stressing that the UAE reserves its full right to respond and take all necessary measures to protect its territory, people and residents. Officials reiterated that the country remains fully prepared to address any threats and that the safety of citizens, residents and visitors remains a top priority. The development came hours after the Ministry of Interior issued a nationwide alert at 12:30am on Sunday. Residents across the UAE received emergency notifications on their mobile phones warning of a potential missile threat. The alert read: “Due to current situation, a potential missile threat, seek immediate shelter in the closest secure building, and steer away from windows, doors and open areas. Await further instructions.” Authorities urged the public to rely only on official sources for updates and to avoid circulating rumours or unverified information on social media. Further updates are expected.
