Tailgating is one of the top causes of traffic accidents in the UAE, which is why authorities impose tough penalties on violators. In Abu Dhabi, tailgating or failure to leave a safe distance between two vehicles will result in a fine of Dh400. If the tailgating results in an accident, then the penalty will also include impoundment of the car and four black points on the motorist’s traffic file. The vehicle owner must pay a fine of Dh5,000 to reclaim the impounded vehicle. “A vehicle remains impounded until fees are paid. It will be auctioned after a maximum of three months if it has not been claimed by the owner,” according to Abu Dhabi Police. Police said that tailgaters drive closely to the vehicle in front of them to harass them into vacating the lane. This can distract the focus of the driver in front of them and increases the risk of serious traffic accidents.
