The UAE is preparing to launch a nationwide facial recognition identification system within the next year, replacing the need for physical Emirates ID cards. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) confirmed that advanced biometric systems—using AI-powered facial recognition and fingerprint technology—have already been developed and tested across various platforms. The aim is to fully digitize personal identification and integrate the system across key sectors such as government agencies, banks, telecoms, hotels, and healthcare. Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention and Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, emphasized the importance of the project during a council session on Wednesday (April 16). “This is part of a national digital-first strategy,” Al Owais said, noting that biometric systems will enhance security, reduce paperwork, and raise service efficiency. The transition will happen in phases, with priority services being the first to adopt the new system. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, had earlier supported the use of facial recognition for private sector services, aiming to streamline processes and improve security.
