UAE launches Facebook alert system for missing children

DUBAI – The first of its kind missing person alert system in the Middle East was recently launched by the UAE through the Facebook app. The Neda alert system was developed by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Facebook to assist in the search for missing children. Facebook users in the area where the child was reported missing will receive an alert once a police report is filed. The Facebook notification will include a photo of the missing child, last known location, and other descriptions. If the child is not found in the area within a certain period, the same alert will be sent to all Facebook users across the UAE. “We will work on managing calls from police general commands in the country, and after taking the required measures, we will circulate their reports in the form of a call through Facebook in the areas where children have gone missing,” said Lt Gen Saif Al Shafar, the under-secretary of the Ministry of Interior. Under the UAE Child Protection Law, anyone convicted of exploiting a child faces at least 10 years’ imprisonment and fines of up to Dh1 million.
