The UAE Government announced on Monday (December 18) a new work permit for private tutors or teachers who give private lessons to students outside educational institutions. The private tutor work permit is valid for two years and is granted free of charge. It allows qualified professionals from the community to offer private lessons individually or in groups, and is aimed at curbing illegal private tuitions. The new permit is launched jointly by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) and the Ministry of Education. Those who can apply for the private tutor permit include registered teachers in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, students aged 15 to 18, and university students. According to MOHRE, those who are given the permit are required sign a code of conduct approved by the ministry. “The introduction of a permit for individuals qualified to provide private lessons will help curb illegal and unregulated practices when recruiting private teachers, which risk affecting the learning process as a whole,” said Dr. Muhammad bin Ibrahim Al Mualla, undersecretary for Academic Affairs of the Ministry of Education. Khalil Al Khoori, undersecretary for Human Resources Affairs at MoHRE, urged residents to hire only licensed private tutors.

How to apply for private tutor permit?

Applications can be submitted though the MOHRE website, in the “Private Teacher Work Permit” category under the “Services” section. It takes up to five working days for the permit to be issued.

What are the documents required?

You need a valid passport or Emirates ID, a signed code of conduct declaration, a certificate of good conduct, No Objection Certificate from employer, No Objection Certificate from guardian of student, certificate of experience or diploma, photo with white background.

What happens if your application is rejected?

You may submit another application after six months.

What happens if you offer private lessons without a permit?

Individuals caught offering illegal private lessons will be fined and subjected to further penalties, according to MOHRE.

Is there a limit on the number of students?

No.

What is the coverage of the private tutor permit?
