The UAE has reached a historic milestone in its space exploration journey with the successful launch of MBZ-SAT, the most advanced satellite in the Middle East. Named in honor of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the satellite was launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA, at 11:09pm UAE time on Tuesday (January 14). Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, grandson of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, attended the landmark event, marking the UAE’s continued ambition in space exploration. The satellite, developed entirely by Emirati engineers at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), is a testament to the UAE's growing expertise in advanced space technology. "This is a proud moment for the UAE," said Yousuf Al Shaibani, Director-General of MBRSC. "MBZ-SAT showcases the capabilities of our engineers and our commitment to advancing space technology to benefit humanity." The satellite’s groundbreaking achievements signal a new era of innovation and scientific exploration for the region. MBZ-SAT boasts unparalleled Earth observation capabilities, producing high-resolution images with spatial detail less than one square meter, a significant enhancement over its predecessors. The satellite’s rapid data processing and transmission capabilities ensure that captured imagery is delivered to end users within two hours, supporting applications such as disaster management, environmental monitoring, and urban planning. The Burj Khalifa joined the celebrations, lighting up in honor of MBZ-SAT’s launch. The satellite was initially announced in 2020 and received final approval for launch last year. Emirati engineers conducted rigorous testing to ensure its readiness, and the final integration with the Falcon 9 rocket was completed at SpaceX facilities. MBZ-SAT also highlights the UAE’s commitment to sustainability, with its advanced electric propulsion system reducing environmental impact. The satellite’s successful deployment is expected to enhance the UAE’s global standing in the aerospace sector. From MBRSC's Mission Control Centre in Dubai, teams will monitor MBZ-SAT’s operations and analyze the transmitted data. This project not only elevates the UAE's technical capabilities but also promotes economic growth through collaborations with local companies. ICA/Expat Media
