UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a federal decree-law establishing the National Anti-Narcotics Authority, a new body that will take the lead in the country’s fight against drugs—from tracking syndicates to helping addicts recover. Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan has been appointed as Chairman of the Authority, according to state news agency WAM on Sunday (August 3). The newly established body has been given sweeping powers and a nationwide mandate to: • Formulate policies, strategies, and legislation to address narcotics and related crimes. • Dismantle drug smuggling and trafficking networks in collaboration with law enforcement. • Oversee rehabilitation and treatment services for individuals with drug addiction. • Conduct research and studies on drug abuse and recovery programs. • Regulate the use of chemical precursors and monitor their non-medical use. • Coordinate with healthcare and pharmaceutical facilities to prevent illegal drug distribution. • Build a national database to track the movement of narcotic and psychotropic substances. • Cooperate with international agencies and countries to share intelligence on drug syndicates. This initiative reflects the UAE’s evolving and assertive approach toward the growing global threat of drug abuse and trafficking. “The creation of a central authority is a critical move to streamline efforts and take a more aggressive, yet compassionate, stance—one that tackles both the roots of addiction and the criminal networks behind it,” an official said. The Authority is also tasked with protecting youth and vulnerable communities by working closely with schools, families, and social institutions to promote awareness and prevention. With increasing regional concerns over synthetic drugs and cross-border narcotics trade, the UAE’s move signals its readiness to lead the fight not only within its borders but also in collaboration with international partners.
