UAE: Maid ordered to pay Dh4,800 after deceiving sponsor, travels to Dubai instead of flying home

After deceiving her sponsor about her travel plans, the court ordered a maid to repay Dh4,800 to her sponsor for all the expenses. The Asian maid had lied to her sponsor, a Gulf national, by saying that she needed to travel home to see her sick child. The sponsor claimed to have paid Dh300 for a taxi to transport the maid to the airport in Dubai, but the maid asked the driver to take her to an apartment in Dubai. The sponsor reported the maid to the authorities after realizing she had been deceived. The sponsor had spent a total of Dh4,800 on the maid's plane ticket and visa renewal. The maid was ordered by the civil court to pay the sponsor Dh4,800 as well as the legal fees, as she had broken her contractual obligation to work for the sponsor. According to court documents, the complainant claimed that the defendant had served as her maid for two years. The complainant added that the maid had asked her sponsor to extend her employment agreement. The maid then claimed she had to travel to her home country because of her son’s illness. It was later discovered that she had quit her work and refused to come back without an acceptable justification, in violation of Article 22 of the Federal Law on Domestic Workers, when she failed to show up at the airport. The court ordered the defendant to pay the sponsor Dh4,800 as the value of the expenses incurred by her, but not the Dh300 that the sponsor claimed she had paid for the taxi to Dubai.
