UAE: Man jailed, fined after forging signatures on Dh1.2 million cheque

An Abu Dhabi resident falsified a woman's signature on a Dh1.2 million cheque. The man has been ordered to pay her Dh50,000 in restitution. According to court documents, the woman filed a civil complaint against the man and requested Dh4 million. She added that the man had filed a lawsuit against her for issuing a dud cheque. According to the lawsuit, the man handed her a cheque with her fake signature, claiming it was hers. After a writing expert established that the signature on the cheque did not match hers, the woman was acquitted. In turn, the woman filed a criminal complaint against the man for the forgery of her signature. He received a three-month prison sentence. She then filed a civil lawsuit seeking monetary compensation. After hearing from all parties, the Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Court delivered a judgment requiring the male to pay the wife Dh50,000 in moral damages.
