An Abu Dhabi expat was ordered to pay Dh50,000 for deceiving a man by claiming to work for an exchange firm and offering to help him transfer money home. After collecting the payment, the defendant lied to the plaintiff, saying he would send the money soon. Days passed, however, and the money was still not sent, upon which the plaintiff asked the accused to give back the money – but he refused. This prompted the plaintiff to take him to court. The complainant said he saved the money for a family investment. Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of fraud earlier. The plaintiff then filed a civil lawsuit against the defendant at the Abu Dhabi Court for Family and Civil Administrative Claims Court, demanding the suspect return the money. The civil court judge ordered the defendant to repay the plaintiff Dh45,000 plus Dh5,000 in damages. The accused was also ordered to pay for the plaintiff's legal expenses.
