The UAE marked July 18 as Union Pledge Day, a new national occasion dedicated to honouring the country’s founding fathers and reaffirming commitment to the nation’s vision and unity. The event, now in its first official year, was proclaimed by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to serve as a moment for citizens and residents alike to reflect on the birth of the federation and the values that underpin its success. Union Pledge Day recalls the historic signing of the UAE Constitution in 1971, led by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his fellow Rulers, establishing the Arab world’s first federal state. “Today, we see our nation ranked among the most advanced nations globally, as well as being one of the best places to live and work,” Sheikh Mohamed said in his first Union Pledge Day address. This day highlights the remarkable journey of state-building—from the foundational phase under Sheikh Zayed, to the empowerment era of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and into the present-day national development drive led by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed. Under Sheikh Khalifa’s leadership, the UAE launched visionary plans including the UAE Vision 2021, Net Zero 2050, and UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. His reign saw the country grow into a regional economic powerhouse and achieve feats such as becoming the first Arab nation to reach Mars. This 2025, the UAE celebrates the Year of Community, emphasizing social cohesion. The federal government has earmarked Dh27.9 billion, or 39 percent of its 2025 budget, for social development—showcasing its dedication to citizen welfare and cultural continuity. Internationally, the UAE continues to lead humanitarian efforts, having delivered over Dhs368 billion in foreign aid, benefiting more than 1 billion people.
