The UAE will mark the International Day of Happiness on Friday (March 20), underscoring its continued focus on wellbeing, social stability and quality of life. Authorities said the country has embedded happiness into governance through policies that support public health, efficient services and economic stability. The UAE was among the first countries to adopt happiness as a government priority. In 2016, it introduced the role of Minister of State for Happiness, which was later expanded to include wellbeing. This approach was further reinforced through the National Programme for Happiness and Positivity, which requires government entities to integrate wellbeing into policies, workplace culture and service delivery. Officials have also conducted nationwide surveys to measure happiness levels and better understand community needs. In 2019, the government launched the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031, aiming to position the UAE among the world’s leading countries in quality of life. The strategy focuses on individuals, society and government, promoting healthy lifestyles, mental wellbeing and positive thinking. The country continues to rank highly in global indicators linked to quality of life. Abu Dhabi was named the world’s safest city for the tenth consecutive year in 2026, according to Numbeo, reflecting strong public safety standards. The UAE also maintains high rankings in income levels, healthcare and education, supported by modern infrastructure and international institutions. In March, S&P Global Ratings affirmed the UAE’s ‘AA/A-1+’ sovereign credit rating with a stable outlook, highlighting economic resilience. Authorities said ongoing investments in digital services, logistics and infrastructure are helping improve accessibility and efficiency, contributing to overall wellbeing and sustainable development.
