The UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced that the Midday Break will begin on June 15 and continue until September 15, banning outdoor work between 12:30pm and 3pm. Now in its 21st year, the regulation aims to protect workers from heat-related illnesses during the peak of summer and aligns with international standards on occupational health and safety. “This initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights and promoting humane, sustainable working environments,” the MoHRE said. Under the law, companies must provide shaded rest areas, cooling fans, and hydration essentials such as water and electrolyte supplements approved by authorities. First-aid kits must also be made available at worksites. While most work is prohibited during the break, certain exceptions apply, including technical operations that require continuity (such as laying asphalt or pouring concrete), emergency repairs, or services that impact the public such as fixing power outages or managing traffic congestion. Firms involved in these exempted activities must still ensure all safety precautions are followed. Violations of the Midday Break will incur a Dh5,000 fine per worker, with a maximum fine of Dh50,000 if multiple workers are affected.
