UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure holds a virtual autonomous shipping forum
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) held a virtual forum to tackle developing worldwide autonomous shipping technologies on Sunday (February 27). The forum titled ‘The Future of Autonomous Vessels in Maritime Shipping’ is one of the activities for Innovation Month with the theme “UAE Innovates 2022.” A-Navigation is one of the several regional and global maritime representatives present in the forum. Speakers discuss the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and new technologies for the efficiency of maritime operations and port management. The value and challenges of autonomous vessels from the perspectives of operations, environment, and safety, effects of the pandemic on the shipping sector, and the need for strategic partnerships for autonomous vessel technologies and automating marine operations development for global shipping sector benefits are just a few of the topics covered. Hassan Mohammed Juma Al-Mansoori, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs, MOEI highlighted the promotion of the UAE leadership’s objective of adopting digital solutions and latest global developments that earned the UAE’s global competitiveness including third rank in the Bunker Supply Index and Top 10 internationally for the ports and container handling capacity. “The Ministry seeks to cooperate with the relevant bodies and organizations to develop legislation and laws that regulate the design, construction, and operation of such vessels, while also ensuring their sustainability for the marine environment,” said Al-Mansoori. UAE is the home for 20 leading international seaports and some of the globally largest oil export ports as well as the Abu Dhabi Ports Group headquarters that developed Maqta Gateway, the first UAE digital port community powered by blockchain. Abu Dhabi Ports is also in collaboration with Robert Allan Ltd., for the development of the world’s first fully unmanned autonomous commercial marine tugboats that could aid Abu Dhabi Ports’ maritime service arm SAFEEN for its efficiency and operational safety during adverse weather conditions. The country is also the home to DP World, known for being the leading enabler of smart trade that launched reshaping international supply chain platforms and innovative products including Dubai Trade, a one-stop shop for cross-border trade, SeaRates, the instant and live container shipping information platform, and the recently launched CARGOES.com for integrated solutions involving worldwide financing and shipping goods. Hessa Al Mallek, Advisor to the Minister for Maritime Transport Affairs noted the UAE’s special importance to innovation, making it a top priority for all sectors especially maritime. Mohammed Khamis Al Kaabi, UAE Permanent Representative at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) explains the uniqueness of the UAE maritime sector as it is the combination of three integral aspects - being a flag state, being a port state, and being a coastal state. He also emphasized that despite the country’s diverse maritime facilities and updated infrastructures, there is a constant need for developing newer ideas and quality solutions to ensure the country’s position as a leading maritime hub with the cooperation of IMO Member States.
