UAE to monitor social media feeds after Sheikh Mohammed’s open letter

DUBAI – Social media feeds in the UAE will now be monitored after an open letter from the Ruler of Dubai addressed those using social media to raise grievances or “stir chaos”. In an open letter, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, sent a veiled warning to social media users, saying that the reputation of the UAE is “not a gaining ground for those who are looking for more followers”. Sheikh Mohammed hit out on those who “stir up chaos on social media” as part of a six-point open letter published on Twitter over the weekend. Following the letter, the UAE Cabinet asked the General Secretariat of the Cabinet to monitor live news and social media feeds while ensuring that all government agencies respond to enquiries and grievances of citizens. The Cabinet also directed the National Media Council to control social media sites and establish stricter standards to defend the UAE’s reputation.
