UAE: Motorist racks up Dh80,000 traffic fines on car for sale

A driver paid Dh7,000 for a car from an Abu Dhabi resident and racked up Dh80,000 in traffic fines while it was still registered in the seller's name. According to court documents, the seller filed a complaint against the defendant at the Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Cases Court, requesting that he pay the traffic fines he incurred while driving the automobile he sold to him. According to the complainant, he sold the car to the defendant for Dh7,000. However, the defendant later requested permission to use the vehicle while it was still registered in the complainant's name. This was done so he could save up enough money to transfer ownership of the car. The man said that while driving the defendant, he accumulated Dh80,000 in traffic penalties and refused to pay them. This motivated him to drag the defendant to court to compel him to pay the fines and transfer ownership of the car to his name. Article 32 of the UAE Traffic Law states that the Licensing Authority must be notified within fourteen days of any act of disposition transferring ownership of a motor vehicle by both parties to the disposition act. The original license holder is responsible for the duties arising from using the vehicle until the license is transferred to the other party. The court appointed a team to look into the matter. Later investigations revealed that the defendant had paid the traffic fines. The judge then dismissed the case. The plaintiff was instructed to pay his legal fees. BKM/ Expat Media
