A driver who trailed another driver on a major road and purposely reversed to hit his car has been fined Dh20,000. The Abu Dhabi Appeals Court overturned a previous verdict by the Court of First Instance, which had dismissed the compensation claim by the driver, who the defendant obstructed. The man had filed a complaint against the motorist, seeking that he pay him Dh115,000 in compensation for the physical and emotional harm he received as a result of the incident, which endangered him and damaged his vehicle. The complainant stated that he was traveling on the main road when the defendant pursued him and blocked his way twice. He said the defendant asked him to stop on the road when he stopped his car in front of him. The defendant then reversed and deliberately hit his vehicle, causing damage to it. The defendant had previously been convicted in the penal court and sentenced to six months in prison for reckless driving and endangering the life of a motorist. The court awarded the victim Dh51,000. In this case, the plaintiff filed a civil claims lawsuit against him, seeking compensation. The defendant's attorney had submitted a memorandum to the court seeking to dismiss the case because the man had previously been compensated in criminal court. The case had previously been dismissed by the Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Claims Court. The plaintiff appealed the result to the appeals court, which overturned the first ruling and ordered the motorist to pay Dh20,000 in damages. He was also told to pay for the plaintiff's legal expenses.
