Motorists in the UAE are being reminded to give priority to pedestrians at crossing areas or face fines of up to Dh500, along with six black points on their driving record. The police have installed high-tech cameras at pedestrian crossings to monitor and capture footage of vehicles, ensuring that motorists adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize pedestrian safety. According to the police, failing to give way to pedestrians, stopping on zebra lines, or causing danger to passersby can result in fines ranging from Dh400 to Dh500. The authorities have warned that ignoring pedestrian crossings can lead to severe run-over accidents, endangering the lives of pedestrians and other road users. Drivers are urged to reduce speed near pedestrian crossings, particularly in densely populated areas such as industrial zones and markets. In addition to monitoring vehicles, police traffic patrols have been deployed to monitor jaywalkers who cross roads at non-designated areas, a practice that is also punishable by a Dh400 fine. Pedestrians are reminded to use designated crossing areas and follow the signals installed at these locations to ensure their safety. Using mobile phones while crossing and ignoring traffic lights at pedestrian crossings are considered serious offenses, as they contribute to road accidents.
