Sharjah Police has issued a stern warning to motorists about the dangers of driving on the hard shoulder, emphasizing that the offense carries a hefty Dh1,000 fine and six black points on the driver’s record. In a recently released video, police showcased instances of reckless driving, where motorists were seen using the emergency lane to bypass traffic congestion. “This is not a solution but a threat to your safety and others,” authorities cautioned. “Stick to your lane—the law protects you, and the road is your responsibility.” The hard shoulder is designated exclusively for emergency use and is marked by bold yellow lines on UAE roads and highways. Traffic officials explained that overtaking or driving in this lane disrupts emergency response times and poses a serious risk to all road users. “Emergency vehicles rely on the hard shoulder to reach accident sites quickly,” a police spokesperson said. “Misuse of this lane can delay lifesaving medical assistance and create hazardous driving conditions.” Authorities have ramped up enforcement efforts, utilizing smart cameras and traffic patrols to catch violators in real-time. Repeat offenders may face even stricter penalties, including temporary driving bans. According to UAE Traffic Law, reckless driving, including improper lane usage, contributes significantly to road accidents. “Many fatal collisions have occurred due to unauthorized lane changes, sudden swerving, and illegal overtaking,” a police official warned.
