The UAE has introduced new visa rules to strengthen residency rights for women and attract global talent, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) announced. Under the new regulations, widows and divorced women sponsored by their spouses can now apply for a one-year renewable residency permit without requiring a sponsor. They must apply within six months of divorce or the death of their husband. The update has been welcomed as a relief for families, as women will no longer have to depend on discretionary court rulings to renew visas. “This gives women the freedom to rebuild their lives, seek jobs, or even start businesses without worrying about their residency status,” according to the ICP. The UAE also launched four new visit visa categories: • AI specialists – single or multiple-entry visa for experts in artificial intelligence, with sponsorship from a technology entity. • Entertainment professionals – temporary visa for performers and creatives. • Event attendees – visa for participants in festivals, conferences, and exhibitions. • Tourism via cruises and yachts – multiple-entry visa sponsored by licensed tourism operators. A one-year renewable humanitarian residence permit will be offered to people from countries facing wars or disasters, without the need for a sponsor. Changes also extend visa sponsorship for relatives and friends, with new income requirements for the sponsor or host: • First-degree relatives: Dh4,000 salary minimum • Second- and third-degree relatives: Dh8,000 salary minimum • Friends: Dh15,000 salary minimum Other amendments include visas for truck drivers, business exploration, and special VIP transit options The ICP said the reforms reflect the UAE’s long-term vision to strengthen its position as a hub for technology, tourism, and global talent.
