A worker's family was awarded Dh80,000 in compensation for the loss of their son after a pile of plastic tubes fell on him while on duty. The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal upheld a lower court ruling that ordered the employer to pay compensation to the man's parents after the company was found guilty of failing to comply with safety requirements, which resulted in the worksite accident that killed the young man. According to court documents, the worker was working in a warehouse when a pile of plastic tubes fell on his head, killing him. The employer was also ordered to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to the worker's family. Following the verdict, the worker's parents filed a civil lawsuit against the employer, demanding Dh510,000 in compensation for their son's death's material and moral damages. In their lawsuit, the parents stated that they were elderly and that their deceased son was their sole breadwinner. After hearing from all parties, the Abu Dhabi Civil Appeals Court ordered the employer to pay Dh60,000 to the family for the loss of their son. The ruling was challenged by both the employer and the parents. The appeals court judge, however, upheld the original verdict but increased the parents' compensation payout to Dh80,000. The employer was also ordered to pay the family's legal fees. BKM/ Expat Media
