The UAE made a bold cultural statement at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai in Japan with a pavilion that merges Emirati heritage and sustainability through groundbreaking architectural design using traditional materials. Departing from futuristic norms, the UAE’s pavilion—titled “Earth to Ether”—features an enchanting forest of 90 wooden columns, each standing 16 meters tall, created from over two million palm fronds sourced across the Middle East and North Africa. The pavilion pays tribute to the palm tree, a symbol of Emirati generosity and resilience. The design incorporates elements of Japanese carpentry and Emirati craftsmanship, showcasing an international collaboration of expertise. Creative Director and Deputy Commissioner General Shaikha Al Ketbi explained that the pavilion is constructed with sustainable, locally-inspired materials such as "Datecrete"—a cement alternative made from ground date pits—and "Date Form", developed from palm and date waste. “The pavilion’s design is based on the recycling of natural materials directly related to the local environment,” said Al Ketbi. “It reflects the significance of the palm tree not only as a symbol of Emirati identity but also as a sustainable building material that is reshaped to tell the story of a nation reinventing its heritage with a spirit of the future.” The eco-friendly pavilion also features recycled date pits in its façade and entrances, using two tonnes of the material. A shaded pergola roof made of Japanese cedar wood is adorned with patterns of Khoos, a traditional Emirati palm weaving art. A creative coalition dubbed the Earth to Ether group led the project, including global names such as Atelier Brückner, Ro’ya Studio, Raymond (Italy), SLA (Denmark), and other partners from the UAE and Japan. Natural elements like Japan’s “Satoyama” forests are reflected in the pavilion’s design, incorporating oak and red pine to symbolize the harmony between humans and nature. Visitors will enjoy shaded walkways and immersive storytelling experiences that celebrate sustainability and cross-cultural unity.
