UAE police cancel black points of 1,680 motorists
A total of 1,680 motorists were given the chance to improve their traffic record after Abu Dhabi Police cancelled black points on their driving files. Many of the motorists were also able to claim their confiscated driving licences under Abu Dhabi Police’s “traffic reduction programme”. The programme—consisting of a series of classes on safe driving—is part of Abu Dhabi Police’s efforts to help raise public awareness of safe driving rules in the country. The scheme grants drivers with eight to 23 black points, a maximum deduction of eight points per year if they pass the course. Under the UAE traffic law, black points are given to motorists who commit traffic violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving. If a motorist accumulates 24 black points, the traffic court may order the suspension or confiscation of his or her driving licence. Vehicle impoundment may also be ordered.
