UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan marked the Islamic New Year with a heartfelt call for lasting peace and stability in the region and around the world. "Congratulations to the people of the UAE and Muslims everywhere on the occasion of Hijri New Year," Sheikh Mohamed wrote on X on Thursday (June 26). "I pray that the year ahead brings lasting peace and stability to the region and the world, and advances progress and prosperity for all." His message comes at the start of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, observed as a time of reflection. While it is a religious occasion, it typically does not include large celebrations like Eid. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, echoed the sentiment, saying he hoped the new year would bring "peace, stability and prosperity." Friday (June 27) was declared a public holiday for both public and private sector workers in the UAE in observance of the Islamic New Year. Sheikh Mohamed's message follows his recent visit to Qatar, where he met with Emir Sheikh Tamim to discuss regional developments and strengthen bilateral relations. According to WAM, they focused on diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, particularly in light of the recent ceasefire between Israel and Iran. ICA/Expat Media
