UAE protocol on Sputnik, Pfizer vaccine booster, eligibility
DUBAI – Booster shots of Pfizer-BioNTech and Sputnik vaccines for emergency use are now approved for some residents, according to UAE health officials. “This booster should help improve immunity after vaccine effectiveness against Covid-19 infections decreases over time,” said UAE Health Sector spokesperson Dr. Noura Al Ghaiti. Booster shots will be given six months after the second dose, health officials said. Those who have taken Pfizer or Sputnik shots after being vaccinated with Sinopharm will not be eligible for booster shots of Pfizer-BioNTech or Sputnik vaccines. Authorities said the following are eligible for a booster dose: - Senior citizens and expats, 60 years old or above - People with chronic illness, between the age of 50 and 59 - People in long-term care at healthcare facilities Dr. Al Ghaiti said the decision to allow booster doses is based on “studies and recommendations”.
