In global ranking, the UAE is 20th among 118 countries, surpassing those in central, southern Asia

  DUBAI - The UAE ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region when it comes to enabling, developing and retaining its workforce talent, according to a study by Insead Business School. Worldwide, the UAE is in 20th place. The results of the study, which was done along with Google and the Centre for Economic Growth, was released last Sunday. The UAE surpassed countries in central and southern Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America in the list. Bruno Lanvin, Insead executive director for global indexes, said the MENA region has a younger workforce than the rest of the world, "which is a blessing and a challenge when it comes to job creation." Lanvin pointed out that "technology is a critical dim­ension of this challenge as the jobs of the future need to be thought of in areas such as artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality and lifelong continuous upskilling." Arab millennials make up 60 percent of the region's population, it was learned. Meanwhile, the study showed that the MENA region trailed behind the UK, US and Singapore in developing the skills of its workforce talent. "The start-ups are mainly driven by foreign talent. There are some multi-stakeholder efforts to promote such behavioral skills but the region still lags behind," the report said.
