The UAE registered its highest May temperature on record—50.4°C—on Friday (May 23), according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). “The highest temperature recorded over the country today is 50.4°C in Al Shawamekh (Abu Dhabi) at 14:30 UAE Local time,” NCM stated on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. Although summer officially begins in the UAE on June 21, the heat has arrived early. Residents have reported sweltering conditions since early May, with temperatures consistently breaching 40°C in several areas. According to astronomical data, summer in the UAE begins with the summer solstice—the longest day of the year—marking the sun’s highest point at noon. This year, the summer season is expected to last until September 22, when the autumnal equinox sets in. During peak summer months, UAE residents often contend with not only soaring temperatures but also high humidity levels, particularly in coastal cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Inland areas, such as Al Ain, frequently record the country’s highest temperatures.
