The Abu Dhabi Police Department has issued a new warning to cyclists and e-scooters who use areas designated for pedestrians walking and jogging. The decision was made in response to pedestrian complaints about cyclists and e-scooters crowding areas designated for pedestrian movement. The force stated that it had increased its traffic campaigns to control violators of the regulations for the use of bicycles and e-scooters as part of its efforts to improve traffic safety for its users and to protect pedestrian safety at various critical intersections throughout the emirate. Residents explained that cyclists and e-scooter riders riding in pedestrian areas endangered their safety. They added that some cyclists are reckless and do not respect pedestrians who use these walkways. Police have always urged cyclists to adhere to safety requirements while riding bicycles in the city to protect their safety and the safety of other road users. Pedestrians are also advised to follow traffic laws and to be alert when crossing the street to avoid being hit by cars or bikes. The police emphasized that cyclists should ride on service roads and cycling paths. Cyclists were also advised to avoid crossing paths with people and to avoid riding in congested areas. The force emphasized the importance of cyclists being alert and riding cautiously while giving pedestrians priority. According to transportation authorities, failure to comply with the regulations governing the use of bicycles and electric bikes in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi will result in fines. These fines range from Dh200 to Dh500 for the following offenses: failure to adhere to the safety instructions and standards (violations related to riding bicycles on prohibited roads and areas).
