UAE satellite phone saves 7 stranded fishermen from Philippines

A satellite phone made by a UAE company aided in rescuing seven fishermen stranded in waters between the Philippines and Indonesia. Yahsat held a ceremony in the Philippines to commemorate the use of the Thuraya XT-LITE satellite phone in saving the lives of fishermen lost in the Pacific Ocean. The seven fishermen encountered rough seas in November 2022, causing their ships to sink. The fisherman was able to call their family using the Thuraya XT-LITE to alert them of the incident. The families then contacted the local service partner, DelNet, who notified Yahsat's Singapore offices of the problem. Yahsat's customer care team was able to top-up credit on the Thuraya XT-LITE, and the fishermen were subsequently able to coordinate with the Coast Guard and provide them with their GPS location. "The success of the search and rescue mission highlights the role of satellite communications and critical connectivity in crisis situations," the company said. The group has assisted governments and international organizations in resolving humanitarian situations by providing data and mobility solutions such as the Thuraya XT-LITE. Through Yahsat Saving Lives, the organization has assisted in responding to distress calls concerning earthquakes and at sea, resulting in the rescue of almost 130 persons in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia by 2022.
