UAE: Security experts warn consumers of Eid shopping fraudsters
The Digital Risk Protection team at Group-IB has discovered an active Ramadan-themed scam campaign targeting consumers in the UAE and other Arabic-speaking countries. Experts discovered a network of 60 interconnected fake pages that used more than 20 well-known local telecoms, retail, entertainment, and celebrity names as bait. According to Ashraf Koheil, director of Business Development in Middle East Africa and Turkey at Group-IBEid, holiday sales are popular periods of the year for both bargain seekers and online scammers. “The fake pages created on a popular blogging service Blogspot promote fake giveaways on the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan,” Koheil explained. “To lure users to scam websites, the fraudsters sent bulk WhatsApp messages and used pop-up windows and Google Ads. The scammers’ goal is to steal personal data or attract traffic to other fraudulent websites,” he added. Authorities warn that customers should avoid buying from unlicensed resellers and clicking on links in bogus discount articles. Furthermore, customers are encouraged to use a different payment card that is not linked to their primary bank account.
