UAE severe weather warning: Road closures, event cancellations, fines, remote learning announced

As the UAE braces for severe weather conditions starting on Friday evening (March 8), authorities announced road closures, event cancellations, remote learning for certain schools as well as fines for law breakers. The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) announced in a press briefing on Thursday (March 7) that severe weather conditions are expected in the UAE from Friday evening (March 8) until Sunday noon (March 10), with heavy rain, lightning, thunder and occasional hailstorms. Read 5-day UAE weather forecast Unstable weather conditions are forecast to start from Al Dhafra and Al Ain regions, before extending to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. The intense weather is forecast to ease by Sunday evening. Authorities have urged residents to stay at home and avoid going out except in cases of “extreme necessity”.

Road closures

Authorities said that all roads leading to valleys and mountains in the UAE will be closed this weekend and will remain closed as severe weather persists.

Remote learning

Ras Al Khaimah’s education authority announced that public schools in the emirate will switch to remote learning on Friday (March 8) as a precautionary measure and in anticipation of severe weather conditions to hit the emirate. Disaster and crisis management teams in each emirate will announce whether to implement remote learning in schools.

Events postponed

The UAE Football Association announced that football matches set to take place from March 8 to 10 across the UAE have been postponed. The association said that new dates will be announced. Authorities and organizers in other emirates are expected to make similar announcements on major outdoor events and other events happening during the weekend.

Fines for violators

NCEMA warned UAE residents that legal action will be taken against those who do not follow safety measures during adverse weather conditions. Gathering near valleys and dams during rain will result in a fine of Dh1,000 and six black points for motorists. Driving that results in obstruction of rescue efforts and traffic operations will result in a Dh1,000 fine and a 60-day confiscation of the vehicle plus four black points. Entering flooded valleys will result in a Dh2,000 fine plus a 60-day vehicle impoundment and 23 black points in the driver’s traffic record.
