UAE: Smoking around children to cost you Dh5,000

Smoking around children is an offence punishable with a minimum fine of Dh5,000 in the UAE. Under the UAE law, smoking in the presence of a child under the age of 12 is strictly prohibited. This applies to smoking in an enclosed area or room, as well as in public or private transport. Violators will be fined not less than Dh5,000. Selling tobacco products to children and anyone below the age of 18 is also prohibited and violators will face jail time of not less than three months, plus a minimum fine of Dh10,000. Law on smoking in UAE Under the UAE law, smoking is prohibited in closed public spaces, including offices, houses of worships, malls, hotels, schools, health facilities, public transport and sports facilities. Smoking is also banned in parks, beaches and all public recreational areas. The law extends to e-cigarettes, shisha and other tobacco products. The fine for offenders ranges from Dh200 to Dh5,000. In malls, smokers can be fined up to Dh2,000 and repeat offenders may be referred to police by mall security officers. The law also covers littering, and those caught throwing cigarette butts on the road or public areas will be fined Dh1,000. The UAE has banned direct or indirect promotion and advertising of tobacco products, and the import of tobacco without proper health warnings in their packaging.
