UAE residents can finally start counting down the days until the end of the scorching summer. According to astronomers, summer 2025 in the UAE will officially end on Monday, September 22, followed by the autumnal equinox on Tuesday, September 23, marking the start of autumn. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Board Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society and member of the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy Sciences, said the astronomical summer began with the summer solstice on June 21 and will run until September 22. Al Jarwan added that the UAE experienced its longest daylight hours between June 18 and 24, with up to 13 hours and 43 minutes of daylight.

Changes in temperature

By mid-August, the country typically experiences intense humidity combined with high temperatures. Relief gradually comes towards the end of the month, with the appearance of the Suhail star signaling the easing of extreme heat and slightly cooler dawns. While meteorological summer is defined as June through August, the astronomical calendar shows that the UAE’s summer stretches longer. This year’s astronomical summer spans 93 days. The autumnal equinox, which falls on September 23, occurs when the sun is directly overhead at the equator, creating nearly equal lengths of day and night across the globe. For the UAE, it signifies: • End of summer’s peak heat: Cooler nights and more pleasant outdoor weather in late September. • Change in wind patterns: The waning Indian monsoon gives way to desert thermal lows, bringing fresh winds and occasional dust. • Shorter days ahead: From this point, daylight hours decrease, ushering in autumn and leading toward the UAE’s mild winter season. The transition is eagerly awaited by many UAE residents, as outdoor activities—from al fresco dining to desert camping—become possible once again after the long, sweltering summer. ICA/Expat Media
