Engineering/design is most appealing career for fresh graduates

DUBAI - As far as jobseekers in the Middle East and North Africa region are concerned, the UAE is the best place to relocate to and look for work, according to a survey by Bayt.com and YouGov. The "Fresh Graduates in the MENA" survey also showed that 24 percent of the respondents consider engineering/design as the most appealing career to pursue followed by banking/finance and advertising/marketing, which was chosen by 20 percent of the participants in the poll. The respondents were asked which industries they see as hiring the most number of fresh graduates and they named advertising/marketing, banking/finance, and IT as the top three sectors. The survey participants were asked why they think those three industries hire more fresh graduates than others and 45 percent believe that it's because fresh graduates have "lower expectation on salary", they can "handle more challenges" and they are "more creative". Meanwhile, the survey also showed that when it comes to challenges faced by fresh graduates in the UAE, finding a job emerged on top followed by "discovering what they want to do in life" and "saving money". When it comes to landing a job, the respondents said the main challenge they face is that employers would prefer applicants with previous work experience. They also cited "knowing how to approach the job search effectively" and "where to find relevant jobs" as challenges in their search for employment. Meanwhile, other findings of the survey are: *61 percent found or plan to find their first job from leading job websites. *44 percent consider being passionate about the job as the most important factor when selecting a specific profession to engage in while 11 percent said a well-known organization is an important factor when choosing a job in the UAE. *Eight percent of respondents mentioned "opportunities for career progression" as an important attribute when selecting a job. *More than six out of 10 respondents are optimistic about career and educational opportunities for their generation compared to the generation of their parents.
