The UAE has achieved a significant milestone by ranking first in the Middle East and tenth globally in the 2024 Soft Power Index, with a score of 57.7 points. This ranking places the UAE ahead of prominent countries like Spain, Sweden, and Australia. The Global Soft Power Index measures a country’s ability to influence others through appeal and attraction rather than coercion. The index, based on research surveying over 170,000 people in more than 100 countries, evaluates various aspects, including global reputation, economic stability, governance, and cultural influence. The UAE's performance is particularly strong in categories such as influence (8th globally), trade and business (10th), and international relations (9th), highlighting its diplomatic efforts and robust economy. The UAE's national brand value has surpassed one trillion dollars, reflecting its enhanced global influence through initiatives like Expo 2020, COP28, and other high-profile events. This achievement underscores the UAE's strategic efforts to boost its global standing and soft power influence. Political scientist Joseph Nye Jr. coined the term soft power in the 80s, defining it as a country’s ability to influence others without coercion. In practice, that process entails countries projecting their values, ideals, and culture across borders to foster goodwill and strengthen partnerships. According to Nye, soft power has a significant impact on the decisions people, businesses, and governments make, arguing that soft power is “a means to success in world politics” for those that know how to leverage it.
