UAE tycoon Merchant gives Dh1 million to free 700 prisoners

  DUBAI – Prisoners numbering 700 across the UAE will be leaving jails in the emirates, thanks to a Dh1 million donation by Indian tycoon Firoz Merchant. The founder and chairman of jewellery chain Pure Gold Group has paid off the debts of hundreds of prisoners so they can celebrate UAE National Day with their families back home. The money will also be used to pay for their airfare or transportation. Police said the inmates are from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Um Al Quwain and Fujairah. “I am inspired by the message of tolerance initiated and led by UAE amongst the world nations,” Merchant said. The prisoners who have benefitted from Merchant’s donation were in jail due to insolvency. They hailed from 30 countries.
