UAE: Unlicensed driver accidentally damages resident’s car, ordered to pay Dh16,000

Al Ain court ordered an unlicensed driver to pay Dh16,500 to a car owner after driving and damaging a vehicle. Investigations revealed that the woman drove the vehicle without permission. According to court records, the man sued the woman, seeking Dh5,000 to unlock his car and an additional Dh13,000 compensation for the damage. The man said the woman didn't have a driving license and took his car without his permission. She then got into an accident that resulted in the vehicle being damaged. No one was injured in the car. The vehicle was impounded. An engineering expert hired by the court found extensive damage to the car's front end and chassis. The report recommended that the vehicle be kept off the road because it was unsafe for passengers. The estimated market value of the vehicle before the accident was Dh12,000, while the estimated amount to fix the car was Dh1500. The defendant also had to pay Dh100 to the plaintiff for each day the car spent in the garage after the accident. After hearing testimony from both sides, the judge issued an order compelling the lady to make the compensation payment to the man.
