The UAE Media Council has announced a groundbreaking overhaul of the country’s media sector, unveiling a comprehensive system aimed at empowering content creators, modernising regulations, and bolstering the UAE’s global media leadership. One of the major highlights is a three-year exemption from permit fees for content creators, part of a broader strategy to incentivise digital media talent and attract innovation and investment. The announcement was made during a press conference at Creators HQ in Emirates Towers, led by Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi, Secretary-General of the UAE Media Council, and Maitha Al Suwaidi, CEO of Strategy and Media Policies Sector. “This new system transforms the way the media sector is regulated and developed,” said Al Shehhi. “It combines updated legislation, comprehensive services, and policies that enhance efficiency and sustainable growth.” Al Shehhi hailed the new Media Regulation Law and its Executive Regulation—the first such legislation in more than 40 years—as a milestone that embraces the UAE’s ambitions in digital media, AI, gaming, and on-demand broadcasting. “We developed this system through collaboration with media professionals and international experts. It’s a practical, responsive approach that fosters innovation, talent, and investment,” he added. Key features of the new system include:- 3-year permit fee exemption for content creators
- Age rating system for all media content to protect minors
- Policy for social media advertising regulation to ensure transparency and content quality
- Streamlined licensing for digital news platforms and media services
- Support for local content and Emirati creatives
