Food, water and electricity not exempt from VAT: FTA

DUBAI - A five percent Value Added Tax (VAT) will be levied on food, water and electricity starting on January 1, according to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). On VAT for all types of food, including rice and bread, FTA Director General Khalid Al Bustani was quoted as saying that essential goods are not exempt from VAT. Meanwhile, the FTA, on its website, said that water and electricity will be taxed at 5 percent starting in January. The draft executive rule published on the FTA website said that water and electricity will be treated as supplied goods, and therefore subject to a 5 percent VAT. According to the FTA executive regulation draft, gas for cooking, lighting or cooling will also be subject to VAT. However, the Ministry of Finance said that an approved draft of the executive regulations is yet to be released next week.
