UAE warns vs. using toxic body building drugs following US FDA alert

  ABU DHABI – The Ministry of Health and Prevention has warned bodybuilders in the country against using drugs that are being illegally marketed online as they contain toxic substances. UAE hospitals and directors of medical zones have been issued circulars warning about the matter following an alert from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dr. Amin Hussain Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary of public health policy and licensing at the ministry, said: "The US Food and Drug Administration has warned that many of these products are promoted for bodybuilding, and muscle development whereas they contain synthetic steroids or hormones related to testosterone." Taking the steroids can damage the liver, cause severe acne and hair loss as well as increased aggression and depression. The public has been advised to always consult a doctor before taking steroids because its indiscriminate use can also cause a heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism - blockage of a major blood vessel in the lungs. Reports said rogue steroids enter the UAE illegally and come from companies that have not been licensed to sell in the country. The products also do not meet international standards. Al Amiri noted that "the absence of parental control and the lack of awareness among family members regarding the risks of hormones and sports steroids contributes to the increase of young people buying them in gyms and other bodybuilding clubs." He said many young people "may not be aware of the health hazards of the hormones (and don't talk about it) for fear of being ridiculed for using them instead of exerting effort to develop their physique. Meanwhile, the ministry will do more random inspections on pharmacies to check if they comply with the law on the sale of medication. Any pharmacy found operating illegally will be warned first before a violation is issued. If banned or unlicensed hormone products are being sold by the erring phrmacy, it could lead to the closure of the facility and revocation of the license to sell.
