UAE welcomes Houthi sanction by EU Council

The United Arab Emirates has applauded the European Union Council's decision to alter Regulation (EU) No 1352/2014, thereby embracing the United Nations' (UN) arms embargo, which all UN Member States are bound to enforce under the UN Charter. The European Council decision cites UN Security Council Resolution 2624 (2022), which describes the Houthis' repeated attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Yemen, as well as sexual violence against women, child military recruitment, and incitement to violence based on religion and nationality. The use of waterborne improvised explosive devices and sea mines by Houthi militias against commercial maritime boats in the Red Sea, as well as cross-border terrorist assaults on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, are among the grounds for the listing. In accordance with Security Council Resolution 2624, providing arms to the Houthis as a group is now prohibited on all EU territory (2022). The European Council's modified regulation comes after the UN Security Council's recent passage of a resolution renewing Yemen's sanctions system and, for the first time, designating the Houthi militants as a "terrorist group." In addition to its multilateral efforts to stop the war in Yemen and alleviate the suffering of Yemeni people, the UAE continues to call on the international community to take a clear stance on the Houthi militias' designation as a terrorist group and to halt the flow of arms and financial support. As recorded in UN reports on Yemen sanctions, the UAE also pushes countries to be more vigilant about their shipments of dual-use materials that are being utilized in weapons systems by the Houthis to attack civilian targets. The United Arab Emirates asserts that the only way to end the crisis is for Yemeni stakeholders to join efforts under the auspices of the United Nations to establish a political solution in accordance with the Gulf Initiative, the National Dialogue Conference's results, and relevant UN resolutions.
